Labour’s half a million or so members will elect a new leader by preferential ballot

To get on the ballot paper

a candidate will need:

22 MPs or MEPs

10%+ of current total

plus 33 constituency Labour parties

5%+ of the current CLPs

or three affiliated unions

Representing at least 5% of affiliated members

Voting is equal – one-person, one-vote – for Labour party members, members of the 12 Labour-affiliated trade unions and people who pay a one-off fee to register and vote

When the ballots have been counted:

The candidate with fewest votes is eliminated

Their votes go to their supporters’ second- choice candidate ...

And so on, until one candidate gains 50% of the vote
