How to avoid ‘avocado hand’

Avocados should carry warning labels after a rise in knife injuries from cutting the fruit, a plastic surgeon warned this week. Simon Eccles said he treats four patients a week at a London hospital for the injury, dubbed ‘avocado hand’. Here's a guide on how to cut them safely:

1

Cut the avocado in half, lengthways

2

Twist halves apart

3

Hit stone with sharp side of knife and twist

to remove

DON’T

Take the point of a knife and try to dig around the stone

4
