The Jisr al-Shughour mosque

Russia's ministry of defence issued an aerial image of an undamaged building to counter claims a mosque was hit on 1 October 2015. This highlighted structure is labelled the 'Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque' but the Atlantic Council report says it is the 'Al Farooq Mosque', known locally for its blue minaret

Online discussion of the incident frequently mentioned the Omar Bin al-Khattab mosque, situated in the north of Jisr al-Shughour. This location was actually obscured in the Russian aerial image by the 'Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque' caption, which the report says conflates the names of two separate mosques in the town

A local activist provided the investigators with an aerial image said to show the Omar Bin al-Khattab mosque in April 2015. This was compared with images supposedly showing the same building damaged by an airstrike. Features visible in both images are highlighted here in green and red

The Atlantic Council team analysed other images of the damaged mosque in this way. Some of these show pieces of a white minaret, suggesting the blue-domed al-Farooq mosque shown in the Russian rebuttal was not hit
