Laptop jargon buster

RAM (random access memory) – this is a device’s short-term working memory. It holds information used in the moment so programmes can run speedily. More RAM helps with multitasking.

CPU (central processing unit) – this is the “brain” of a computer, the main processor which carries out instructions, completes calculations and coordinates actions. AMD and Intel are different brands of CPU.

SSD (solid-state drive) – a long-term built-in storage device that retains information when the computer is off. These are now standard and more modern, reliable and faster than the old hard disk drives.

OS (operating system) – this is the core layer of software that runs a computer and sits between apps and hardware. It manages elements such as the CPU, memory and files. Apple products exclusively run macOS, and Windows runs on a large range of brands. Chromebooks use ChromeOS.
