Four things fraudsters say to try to get you to hand over money

Liz Ziegler, fraud prevention director at Lloyds Bank, offers the following advice:

Fraudsters want you to move your money to another account – their account. So they might pretend to be from your bank, the police, HMRC, or another organisation you know and trust. They’ll do their best to sound professional and they can even copy an organisation’s phone number so it looks genuine on your caller ID.

When they call, they’ll say things like:

  • “There’s a problem with your account and it’s at risk from fraud.”
  • “You’re due a refund.”
  • “We need your help to catch criminals.”
  • “You owe money to HMRC.”

Stop, hang up, dial 159
If alarm bells ring, or you want to double-check that a call is from your bank, hang up and dial 159. Banks and telephone companies set up this special phone number to help fight fraud. Call it and you’ll be securely connected to your bank.
