How to protect yourself from scam calls

Liz Ziegler, fraud prevention director at Lloyds Bank, offers the following advice:

Scam callers can try to convince you that they’re calling from your bank. They may sound professional and can even copy your bank’s telephone number so it looks genuine on your caller ID. This is all part of the scam. Watch out if someone calls and asks you to do things your bank never would, such as:

  • Share your account details, for instance user ID, password and memorable information
  • Reveal your personal security number for telephone banking
  • Share your PIN code or card expiry date
  • Move your money to another account to keep it safe

Stop, hang up, dial 159
If alarm bells ring, or you want to double check that a call is from your bank, hang up and dial 159. Banks and telephone companies set up this special phone number to help fight fraud. Call it and you’ll be securely connected to your bank.
