Tips on how to help employees tap into intrinsic motivation:

• Remember, everyone is different; a wide range of diverse priorities, interests and passions can be fostered even in a small team. “Everyone is motivated by something, passionate about something. You don’t have to decide what that is, you just need them to understand it for themselves,” says Charlotte.

• Coaching skills are crucial, enabling people to find their own way. “As a leader, you don’t have to come up with all the ideas, but create space for people to come up with their own.”

• The biggest skill for leaders doing this work is to listen. “You can hear if someone is loving something, or feeling frustration. By listening to what people say, the tone of their voice and by looking at their body language, you can help work out the right balance for them.”

• A bit of discomfort is good. “You need to support people to stretch themselves, and recognise their differences, all while getting the job done.”
