Whether it’s helping you pick apart a technical problem you can’t figure out on your own, offering support during difficult times, or passing on a vital contact, a mentor can make all the difference. Knowing this, mentorship was at the heart of the eBay Doers scheme – a ten-week business incubator created to help 15 fledgling entrepreneurs build up their businesses on eBay.
As well as workshops with industry experts, publicity, funding and support from eBay’s Concierge team (a tailored service for eBay members that helps them with their buying and selling needs), we paired each eBay Doer up with an industry expert to mentor them for the duration, with terrific results. From helping them master social media to talking through the tough decision to leave a day job and focus on their business full time, each Doer has gained something different from their mentorship relationship.
“[My mentor] has been really supportive,” says Ildut Loarer, one of the Doers. “He’s spotted things that could have been a problem down the line – what someone with a lot of knowledge of business is so helpful for.”
Simon Basil, another of the 15, agrees: “You can’t beat speaking to someone face to face and fleshing out a problem.”
