Many of the poems were taken with the kind permission from Modern Poetry in Translation
Estimates for troop numbers and casualties assembled in consultation with Jay Winter, Anne Samson, Christian Koller, Santanu Das and others. Casualty statistics draw on Winter’s research and include sickness and POWs who died in captivity, until mid-1919. Civilian deaths have not been included but outnumber military deaths in some countries.
