According to a new survey, three out of five Australians are overweight, with a BMI over 25
This means about 5.8 million men and 5.2 million women are too fat
The average overweight Australian carries 16.5kg more than the average person who isn't overweight
This weighs around the same as 16.5 litres of milk
If you counted the extra weight from all overweight Australians, this works out to 180,000 tonnes of "extra weight"
In 2008 the same figure was 150,000. So this means that the total extra weight of overweight Australians has increased by 5,000 tonnes per year
2008 150,000 tonnes
2014 180,000 tonnes
But just how much is 5,000 tonnes?
A small car weighs around one tonne
So 5,000 cars would be equal to the total extra weight Australians have gained each year
Or... One medium cargo or military ship
