Whistling Straits Ð 18th hole

Bunker hell

In 2010, Dustin Johnson infamously grounded his club on a patch of ground on the 18th which was considered a bunker, incurring a two-shot penalty which saw him miss out on a play-off. This week that particular bunker is covered by a corporate hospitality tent

The statistics

Named after it's architect Pete Dye, one of the toughest holes in golf was birdied only 14 times the last time it hosted the US PGA, and while it was less likely to cause a meltdown of double bogey or worse than in 2004, it still played slightly harder overall.

The 18th has a stunning setting. If you don’t hit the fairway, you have to lay-up and it becomes very tough. The challenge is just to hit that fairway. If you do it, you have a mid-iron into the green, a big green which gives you a chance without too many problems, with that club in your hand. The pin is always in different sections on the green. If you are laying up, your birdie chance is gone and the problem is getting onto the right section where you can just save par”

“Playing this course again this week has made me realise this is almost my favourite in America now. The 18th is part of that, part of the last three or four holes which can all be super interesting, even more so if they are down wind. But this is the really tricky one. There are 96 bunkers, for a start.
