El Paso and west Texas
The last remaining abortion clinic in El Paso will close under the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling, which upheld Texas's right to enforce their omnibus abortion law, known as HB2. The court did not grant the El Paso clinic a reprieve, citing the availability of a nearby out-of-state abortion provider in neighboring New Mexico. The next closest in-state clinic, however, is 550 miles away, in San Antonio – a 7.5h drive according to Google Maps.
Rio Grande Valley
The appeals court upheld a reprieve that allows Whole Woman's Health in McAllen, Texas to continue service. Originally, all three clinics in south Texas – or the Rio Grande Valley as the region is known – cut abortion services due to their inability to fulfill HB2's admitting privileges requirement. The cuts left women in the area without nearby access to abortion care. If the McAllen clinic were once again closed, the next closest clinic would be in San Antonio, up to a 250-mile or 3.75 hour drive from Harlingen, Texas.
I-35 and I-45 corridors
Unless the appeals court order is overturned by the Supreme Court, all but eight of Texas's 20 remaining abortion clinics will close. Seven of the those clinics are in major cities along the I-35 and I-45 corridors. Opponents of HB2 say clinic closures have disproportionately affected low-income women outside of major metropolitan areas.
